What’s better than cozying up and reading the iconic IKEA catalog? Cozying up and having the iconic IKEA catalog read to you. An ambitious, months-long labor of love, the 2021 IKEA catalog was turned into a podcast. The reactions, media pickups and recognition were truly meatballs.

March of 2020 in New York had everyone locked down and stir crazy in their (mostly) tiny apartments. Escaping one’s present domain and perhaps the city at large was most certainly in the air. Knowing that the reality of either was fraught with peril, the next best thing was to do it virtually, all while showcasing IKEA’s famous organizational tools in the process.

Pride in 2020 looked very different due to the pandemic. Given that in-person events and the usual festivities were not an option, we needed another approach to call attention to IKEA’s charitable support of the Ali Forney Center in NYC and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

So we approached RuPaul’s Drag Race Superstar Alyssa Edwards and actress & Trans activist Isis King to host a the first-ever virtual KIKI on Instagram Live. Fans could submit questions, watch them perform dares, win prizes and of course, SPILL THE TEA.

The nearly one-hour event became an open conversation on queer and race topics, as well a platform for some powerful and personal stories about the causes that IKEA was supporting.

The results were also something to celebrate.

We wanted to launch a new collection that would cater to our modern digital addictions. We did this on April Fool’s Day. As a joke.

People did not want it to be a joke. With no money and one post, we racked up 106MM impressions.

IKEA - The Winter Sale

On its face, the bi-annual IKEA Winter/Summer Sale would seem like a ripe and straightforward creative assignment. But, given that the sale itself is a massive off-loading of random product inventory, talking about any specific product is off-limits, as is featuring any of the store showrooms all while still being required to shoot in store. Oh, and nothing had beaten a very famous IKEA Canada Winter Sale spot in testing in nearly 15 years. Easy. 

So, with a national TV buy alongside a substantial social push, we created a modern update that tapped into the true organic fandom of an IKEA sale that focused not on what was available in it, but on the consumer behavior around it.
